( http://heritage-key.com/blogs/sean-williams/awil-video-series-colchester-brit... ) Jamie Hobbis heads down to Colchester to meet with the Colchester Archaeological Trust's Howard Brooks who takes Jamie on an adventure of the first Roman town in Britain. Showing the guardrooms of the Balkerne Gate which acted as the security entrance for the city, he describes how Queen Boudica destroyed the town. Howard also takes Jamie to the Roman wall of Colchester, and explains its material composition before taking him to a Roman Christian church where he talks about the importance of religion and Christianity on the empire and Britain at this time.

Jamie spots a Roman looking church, but Howard explains that it is actually a Saxon church, and was constructed using Roman building materials. Jamie also learns about the town's Roman theatre, a part of which can be viewed inside a vacated home.

  • What a great lace for people who love history, this is a place steeped in tradition and what i call touch feely history.stones and walls etc.I will try to have at least a day here soon.Didn't humpty dumpty originate here too?

  • Colchester is big enough to be a city. Its got a lot going for it, great location, commuter distance, great history loads of abandoned building suitable for renovation.. Its a shame the town never lives up to its full potential. A lot could be done to liven the place up and add some culture and character. The place is waiting for some sort of planning, Its certainly not a very inviting, charismatic or exciting place at the moment.

  • @runfatboy75 Well you can shut up!! i live in colchester and its a very friendly place, No drugs atall, Hardly any fighting, And like every other town the achahol is in the pubs or at TESCO!! Its a very popular place and you probably have never been you just want to sture up trubble :/

  • That's my Dad! :D I didn't tell me about this video! :p

  • The mosaic that keeps getting shown isn't very old, it was made a few years ago by me/people at my school when the roman circus was found.

  • ON the style of the video they can can it. too fast too quick scene changes the music it is Fkd up doccumentaries should not be like this. Good content but bad style. not for anyone over 15 years old

  • Colchester.... Over crowded with people jamming up the roads on their way to the shops. The man driving with his arm wrapped around the top of the steering wheel, like a monkey on a tyre, the woman in the passenger seat staring gormlessly into space. The town is full of new build houses that have been occupied by the benefit taking unemployable. Don't take your family into the town centre after 6pm, it's just full of fighting, alcohol and drugs. I got out!

  • @JamesWaton

ha! i guess you have to know which pubs not to go to

  • @norristerse I'd love it if there wasn't so many squadies!
