Benny Goodman's January 16, 1938, Carnegie Hall concert is considered, perhaps, the single most important jazz concert in history.
This was the genre's "coming out party", its formal introduction to the world of "respectable" music, performed at the throne of musical respectability, Carnegie Hall.

  • The full version of this can be obtained on "Benny Goodman - The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert" two CD set. Honeysuckle Rose is 16 min. 35 secs. long. Freddie Green's solo is fabulous, but Goodman apparently received some criticism for motioning to Green to take the solo - had to do with Freddie, being a rythym guitarist, having a high setting on his strings. This information was in the booklet that came with the CD's. You guitarists out there will know what this is.

  • Does anyone have the full version of this?! I hear Freddie Green takes a rare solo later on in the piece.

  • Checking my watch, I hear Prez from 1:10 to 2:15, Buck Clayton from 4:05 to 5:40, the Rabbit from 5:40 to 7:20, and Harry Carney just as this tape cuts off. Agree that this one's a total winner!

  • This was truly the greatest jazz concert performed by King of swing BG

& his equaly talented side mens, boy how much the music have

changed i would give anything if we could have them back, those

years was when you enjoyed good music.

  • the greatest jazz ever.rmuk

  • Prez rules!

  • @mrmoney474 For all the years I have listened to this magical performance I never 'heard' the drum & guitar work as you describe - thank you! Learn something every day. Your observation illustrates how seamlessly the two instruments blended in sound and effect. Beautiful.

  • In my humble opinion, this is the greatest jazz tune of all time played by the greatest assembleage of jazz musicians ever. I could listen to this rendition over and over. To bad it is not the whole arrangement which lasted nearly 14 minutes.

  • This is the absolute tops of all swing bands, hands down and Jesse Stacey stole the show with his piano on this recording and this is from a 93 years old that knows a little something about the swing time music...none were ever as good and genuine as Benny Goodman and I loved them all.
