How does language define culture? What does it mean to strip meaning from language? The art of Xu Bing raises these stirring questions. Globally known for his contemporary and dynamic style, the renowned Chinese artist made a special appearance at the Asian Art Museum to talk about influences on his art, specifically his works since 2008. A privilege to see this. I love that it is directly translated, almost a comment on the subject itself. Thanking Gary Woodley, tutor from the Slade, London, for introducing Xu-Bing's work to me in 2006.

Fantastic!
One of the most interesting aspects of this talk is Xu Bing's creative process. Like the best novelists and detectives in the world, he is a master observer, a quality that allows him to uncover sources of art from the most mundane activities in daily life. Equally impressive is the thinking he puts into his work, which levels the high and low without demeaning either. Finally, he never ceases to take on new challenges.
Thanks for sharing this great artist's insight!
