A violent storm with winds between 75 and 100 mph hit Battle Creek, Michigan, at 4:35 pm on May, 29,2011. The storm knocked out power to much of the city just before it hit, which turned out to be a good thing, because the storm proceeded to knock over a great many trees, uprooting most, and snapping some off. Power began coming back on early the next evening. (Ignore the beeping, it's the security system telling me the power's out).

  • How can a storm knock out power before it hits? That makes no sense. I certainly didn't get power back the next day........ not until Friday :-(

  • @73SDR I'm not sure, but that's what happened. We were lucky in our neighborhood to get our power back on so quickly

I'll answer that since I live in Battle Creek.

Short answer? NO. They classified it as 'straight line winds', so there was no siren going off. I live on the higher ground of the city, so my side got hit the hardest. A lot of folks claimed there were multiple tornado's, like a bunch of F1's and F2's. The most I heard was 4.

  • one week and i live in lakeview right off of capital ave s.w. that right one week

  • Yeah, I was there. I was on vacation at a Red Roof Inn in Kalamazoo when the storm hit. I checked in at 2.0PM and hit the hay (I had been on the Interstate all the way up from Virginia, and I was bushed). I showered up and turned in for a nap when all of a sudden KABOOM there was a big explosion which scared seven kinds of feces outta me. Woke me up. Looked at the window, saw the storm, thought 'thank God I am dry' then went back to sleep.

  • did the city get a chance to sound the sirens before the storm hit?

  • I was terrified home alone with my 3 yr old, when I rushed him to the bath tub, (no basement) when2 big huge trees fell on top of where we was. I have never been so scared in my life,I got scratched up a lil, dont know how, I just had keepin my son safe on my mind! & it seems like the storms keep gettin worse! NEVER wanna ever go threw that again!

  • WOW, looks like a hurricane! Crazy!

How brave you are to get this shot!
