And that people will forget what really good films are. 1930-1970's movies where made for mature audience. Today they make it for the 9-13 olds mental level.

What the hell was Gus Van Sant thinking when he remade Psycho? Heck, I never understood why Tim Burton had to remake "Planet of the Apes" in 2001.

The real reason movies are remade is to milk more money from old classics.

hmmm, no That movie was set in future and in the future, both Soviet and American, you can live in any city of the world. Be it Tokyo or Moscow, NYC, LA or some village in Africa. Thats what the future looks like.

I remember first renting the video and wondering "wow, does Moscow really look that modern? I didn't even know the city had freeways and that many cars!" And I failed to see the Japanese characters. So try to comprehend this: the movie is set perhaps in 21st century Russia, but futuristic Moscow has old Datsun's and Toyota's that are self-running and have cameras on the dashboard. Oh.....kayyyyyyyy!

Excellent black-and-white scene from the 1972 Russian film "Solaris".

Sorry but in my experience 95% of all remakes today are inferior to their originals, which would lead me to believe they are 1. Out of ideas, 2. Well aware that most of the young audience today are totally oblivious to the originals and 3. Milking the old stories for all their worth.

Haven't seen Soderberg's "Solaris" and from what I've heard it's not even a decent remake.

Those remakes are a rare exception to the rule. Also, they were usually re-interpreted, only kept the basic premise or were closer to the short story/novel/original script etc. Btw, how many of those remakes you mention were made recently? The Departed. Personally I find it an average Scorsese film and some scenes were copied straight off "Infernal Affairs". I also am puzzled by him casting DiCaprio in the lead role. Carpenter's "The Thing" stayed closer to the story "Who Goes There?".

Don't be silly. he Thing, The Fly, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Scarface, A Fistful of Dollars, The Maltese Falcon, The Departed, The Magnificent Seven... Not all remakes are made of pure evil. It's possible to make a great film out of anything, even other movies.

This scene undoubtedly sorts out the viewers into wheat and chaff. The spiritual from the unspiritual. I am reminded of a comment that i read a few years back about someone who had watched Stalker together with his Girlfriend. He said that after the movie, she hadn't a clue about what it was all about.- He then said, that he knew his relationship with her from that moment on, was doomed.

well, it was obviously filmed with the intent to have meaning - i mean, they hardly filmed it by accident or the movie was 5 mins too short and they had some left over film, you have to admit those are ridiculous notions. The fun in cinema like this is for us to try and work out what the hell the director was thinking about when he made it. Its fun. Where's the harm in that?
