The Railmobile was a frankly deranged idea consisting of a modified flat wagon propelled by a motor car lashed to it. The contraption was tested on the Southern's Westerham branch after it closed and managed to provide clear evidence that this was not the future of personal transport, providing as it did all of the inconveniences of rail travel with half the fuel economy. Ironically, it is now a simple feat for any motorist to drive along the Westerham line as it is for the most part buried under the M25 (London orbital) motorway.

  • How to completely transorm the ride and handling of an Imp, (drives like it's on rails! LOL)

I bet it didn't do much for the fuel consumption though, or the tyres.

  • Yes indeed. An idea as mad as cheese, at an indicated 60mph the trolley is doing 30. When you spot one coming the other way, you're screwed. Brakes? The thing weighs a ton plus the car! Got a front wheel drive car? Dang!

  • and the twat drving the car is going to understand semaphore signals and know to stop just spot on when he gets to the other end? Right.

  • Was the date April 1st 1962 by any chance?

  • Anyway, it's British!

  • I've got to make a model of that!!

  • but how do you steer?

  • Did he really say baby car? :D

  • Oh I say! I've got a Hillman Imp, though somewhat newer than the one in the vid. I'd love one of those trolleys though - just think of the fun!

  • What, and train drivers didn't.

  • I love the suggestion that you could the paper whilst driving....

  • LOL! The solution to all our tranport problems! However... I was worried about whether Mr Joe Public would know a stop semapore from a caution!!!
