Addressing National Security Challenges in the Post 911 World
Professor Herbert York, founding Director of the University of California's Institute on Global Conflict and Professor Susan Shirk, Current Director

Conversations with History host Harry Kreisler welcomes University of California Professors Herbert York and Susan Shirk for a discussion of the role of university research institutes in meeting today's national security challenges. York, the first director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and founding director of the UC Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC) and Shirk, Asian security policy expert and current IGCC Director, compare the Cold War and the Post 911 world. They assess the analytic skills required for the next generation of security analysts. Emphasizing the need for an interdisciplinary perspective, they focus on the problem of non proliferation. Highlighting the importance of regional contexts and the need for well informed diplomacy, they evaluate the U.S. response in managing these threats since 911 and offer recommendations for the future.
