My video response for my friend: Mr. naturalist: sigma1920

These are our Japanese rhinoceros Beetles.

Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Arthropoda
Class: Insecta
Order: Coleoptera
Family: Scarabaeidae
Subfamily: Dynastinae
Genus: Trypoxylus
Species: T. dichotomus

We bought them around 13 US dollars for a pair.

These are our pets and we bred them for observation.

Male beetles will usually die in the fall after mating many times, and the female will die after laying eggs. The eggs are laid in a piece of rotting wood.

The eggs hatch into larva, which usually mature in a year.

  • ahh... allomyrina dichotoma. also known as... MuSHiKiNG!

  • Rhinoceros beetles make great pets.

While they may not live the longest, they are extreamly safe for young children, having nearly no way to harm them. ((short of the child trying to swallow it ofcourse))

They are also very easy to care for, meaning you can teach your child responsability, without forcing anything to hard on them.
