I just built one like this, but it's just one container with the lid on, a hole cut in the side and wrapped with duct tape. They've been in there 5 minutes and are having so much fun. Best part is, no more ruined carpet!

aww you shouldn't take it away from them - it's a fantastic way to expel energy, and fulfill their natural instinct to dig in a safer way. Sure they might make a bit of a mess, but just put a throw run or blanket under it and when they are done just pour the contents from the throw back into the box. You can even bury their favourite toys and treats in the rice for them to have a better feeling of hunt-and-find since their natural instinct is based on their initial use for hunting rodents.

Oh man, that's a good idea for a lid with the tube attached. They made such an unholy mess throwing/digging rice out, I took it away from them.

Apparently they dig instinctively. Rice wouldn't make dust, and if any gets out its easy enough to vacuum.
