The GI tract which ends up like this, starts out as a straight tube consisting of the foregut, the hindgut and the midgut. The midgut will become most of the duodenum, the jejuno-ileum and the proximal colon. In the course of development, the midgut forms a loop that twists counter-clockwise on itself ending up like this. In the course of this rotation, the part of the loop that becomes the proximal colon passes in front of the part that forms the duodenum and that's the way we find it in the adult.
