Rally to Read: providing educational resources to rural schools

Every year a group of colleagues in Standard Bank Group in South Africa take to 4x4s and spend two weekends meeting teachers and learners at selected rural schools. Their mission: to get books and other educational tools to those learners.

This is our contribution to Rally to Read, a literacy development programme that operates through about 100 business sponsors and more than 1 200 volunteers in South Africa.

Using their own vehicles, volunteers set off to nine different regions to deliver books and other educational resources.

Standard Bank Group has supported Rally to Read since it was launched in 1998.

Those within Standard Bank Group who have taken to the road with Rally to Read say that besides helping the learners they also get to explore areas of the country they would otherwise never get to see -- and also put their 4x4 driving skills to the test!
