During firings on Sept. 22-24 at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Laser Avenger neutralizes multiple types of IEDs, including large-caliber artillery munitions and smaller bomblets and mortar rounds, according to Boeing.

OK, the laser does work but at what cost? This is probably a solid state laser firing several kilowatts. Big, heavy, and expensive. Can we stop wasting money on toys for the amusement of the press and actually make something the troops can use?

Physics fail.

LASERs do not release any radiation, unless, of course, what you're shooting at is radioactive. A LASER is an extremely concentrated, coherent beam of light.

MASERs are basically the same principle, but use microwaves.

GRASERs are gamma-ray lasers, and will release a fair amount of radiation--almost all of it coming from the nuclear weapon used to generate the gamma rays.
