Complicated defiant, creative people usually have complicated problems. And yes, I would rather have fascinating drop-outs (like Edie)around me then the oblivious ant-like army of sorority girls and frat boys who work at banks and law firms and who now pollute my city. She was most likely under the influence of psychiatric meds that were given to patients at the time that basically put them into a catatonic state, they were in the same family as Thorazine, which is known to cause convulsions and Parkonsinism and the slurred speech you hear here.  Also, she smoked about 3 packs of cigarettes a day, which attributes to her tone of voice.
