Seamus Murphy - On Battleship Hill

It opens in the house in Berlin I was staying while editing the films with Sebastian Gollek. This is Franz, Sebastian's stepfather. I liked having a German reciting the opening lines to a song written from and about the other side of the trenches. The bingo ladies were shot on Canvey Island, near Southend in Essex. Liked connecting them with the rockabilly/skiffle sound at the beginning of the track. Maybe when they were young women they jived to that sound? The bingo hall might have been a dance hall in their day. Canvey Island was certainly home to Dr. Feelgood.

  • What a haunting, yet wistful song. Clearly Battleship Hill refers to the Gallipoli campaign of WWI and yet there is something timeless and placeless about it too. A very human song full of sorrow and yet there is this realization contained within that leaves me speechless and sad yet manic and hopeful. Hard to explain.True genius here. Probably the best song dealing with war I have ever heard imho.

  • If this was to be the last song I ever heard I'd be a happy man. Puts the rest of the simpering "record industry" to shame. Bloody genius!
