This line-up is in fact more Portal than Cynic. The bassist here (Chris Kringel) was the original Portal bassist. He was about to record Focus but Paul and Sean decided to use Malone for the record and Chris for the tour + the next album feature him. That album was the portal demo and he kept working with them on Aeon Spoke.
Btw, Portal demo was done after Focus, but some songs were done around the same time.
