Oregon Republican Touts Work With Obama in New Ad
In special House elections in Mississippi and Louisiana earlier this year, Republicans tried to tie the Democrats to Senator Barack Obama, who at the time appeared increasingly likely to win the presidential nomination.
The tactic was not successful, but trying to tie local candidates to a national figure in the same party is classic. A bit more unconventional is a new ad from Senator Gordon Smith of Oregon. The moderate Oregon Republican is among the most at-risk incumbents in 2008. In his latest ad, he tries to associate himself with Mr. Obama, the opposite party's candidate.
He highlights instances when he teamed up with Mr. Obama on legislation to increase gas mileage in automobiles and praise from Gov. Ted Kulongoski, a Democrat.
"I'm Gordon Smith, and I approve working together across party lines -- and this ad," he says in closing.
The Obama campaign does not want there to be any confusion.
"Barack Obama has a long record of bipartisan accomplishment and we appreciate that it is respected by his Democratic and Republican colleagues in the Senate," said Bill Burton, an Obama spokesman, in a statement. "But in this race, Oregonians should know that Barack Obama supports Jeff Merkley for Senate. Merkley will help Obama bring about the fundamental change we need in Washington."

@HavasuBen disagreement is a good thing and also a bad thing. I am all about a multi-party system. But if we could just get away from those back alley deals and promising tax cuts and funding to people to get there vote and support, the multi-party system would be great. If they worried about the people and not about the people who they owe favor's too.

bipartisanship is not Democratic. It leads to a one-party system, or dictatorship. I want disagreement, it's healthy. We need our parties to both hold extreme views that way we can decide what side on different issues to be on.

If that is the last thing you care about then why are you answering my post? As a wise man once said. We get the politicians that we deserve. I guess that means that you are as retarded as the man that you are voting for. Good luck, because you will need it

the last thing i care about is some retards opinion that doesnt even live here. denmark? i wont grieve for you when russia comes knocking on your door. ill remember you guys know so much better how to protect a country and how to use diplomacy. dont ever ask for America's help... you will be soon because russia already tried out a dry run of what theyre going to start doing more and more. as a war veteran myself, i know the fighting is protecting us in the states. theyre on defense now, not us.

Wake up! If McCain becomes your president, no one in the western world will work together with America anymore, no one will take you serious, and America will be left alone, with no help from abroad. And if you believe that is how to keep your country safe and how to fight terrorism and the Russians, then I have some land on the sun to sell you

calling a representative from oregon a republican is fantastic as finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. is there any more liberal a state other than massachusetts and maybe california? just like mccain gets called a republican, hes not. nor is this guy. im voting on the person i know will keep the country safe. obama wants to downsize and cut funds from the military. i hardly think this is a time to leave up open to attacks. obama is a fool. obama is they typical politician, nothing new
