In 1985 Murray Bookchin was the keynote speaker at the University of Waterloo's PIRG conference.

In this section, he gives a firsthand account of ecological breakdown, namely in the Schwarzwald (Black Forest) of Germany and the mountains of Vermont. He stresses that we are simplifying of the planet, by polluting its complexity and diversity, while undermining its variety. "We are pushing back the clock of geology." Not only that, but we are also simplifying human life by destroying communities, interrelationships, and atomizing individuals.
