To say that the meaning of life is so specific to adding value to the generations to come is just preaching of one's own thoughts. That is not everyone's meaning of life. That may be a small part of it but let's not assume that this is the case for the world.. The meaning of life is in the eye of the beholder.. If you're sitting on your deathbed and you think to yourself, "I've lived a great life..I'm dying happy..," then mission accomplished. You have found your own meaning.

I think that what brianwong73 is quite right. I believe that every risk is also an opportunity, it all depends on your mindset. As in the media creating fear about "the recession", it all also comes down to whether you think critically before you accept everything that you are being told.

Since this is an important topic, I'll add this as well. Everything you enjoy today. From processed milk, to the internet, to electricity, was born out of human curiosity. It is very important to be curious about the world and not settle for what is given to you. If you don't work hard and give something to society, when you get older, you will realize you had no value and die unfulfilled.

You're given only a few years to live. The meaning of life is to learn as much as you can and then benefit society by creating your own enterprises that enrich society, while at the same time, (and something that has never been seen by mankind before), we must be conscious of our affect on the planet.
If you ask yourself "But why should we care about the planet if we won't be around in 100 years to see our affects?" Then you simply don't understand the meaning of life.

cuiltivator88 is almost right. But brianwong73 is dead wrong. If you are intelligent and make your life's goal profit, then you will still end up raping the planet.
What is needed is a worldwide paradigm shift towards selflessness and scientific endeavour. The world is currently sustainable, but in 100 years it will simply not be for humans anymore.
The problem is society rewards the selfish and not those who respect nature and human coexistence with it. This must change and very quickly.

OK,I think I get you - ignore the realities and gravity of this unprecedented economic crisis and blame the media for inventing it and creating fear. Instead, assume the boom times are coming back bigger and better and now is the type to invest, invest in more cheap stuff available from endless cheap oil & raping the planet endlessly.Your right about the need to be informed but mainstream media are not the ones to pay attention to & ironically they broadcast as much hype as fear. Do yr research
