YNN reports on Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales presentation at Rochester Institute of Technology as part of the university's Horton Distinguished Speaker series.
Anchor: It's become an indespensible resource in the internet age. Wikipedia is the free online site that compiles information uploaded by site visitors. Site founder Jimmy Wales was in Rochester this afternoon talking about the meteoric rise of his website. Wales was at RIT as part of a speaking series during the school's homecoming. Wales says his site is a global charitable humanitarian effort to create the free resource for all languages of the world. Wales said the site's not-for-profit status keeps the site focused on its core mission of spreading the resource to everyone on the planet.
Wales: So if we were a for profit, we would be quite naturally, and there's nothing wrong with it, more interested in getting more users in the U.S. and Europe where there's a lot of advertising dollars. With Wikipedia, we don't care about that. We really care aut getting more users in India and Africa, so it helps us stay focused on our global mission.
Anchor: Wales added wikipedia is the fourth or fifth most visited site on the Internet.
