"I lived in northern Louisiana for a couple of years... took many road trips to Mississippi, and down to New Orleans via one show stop or another. The music that poured from the Mississippi Delta runs in all our bloodstreams now.

Our national attention has been diverted by the quagmire of Iraq -- but there's Robert Johnson, still standing at the crossroads, with his tilted Stetson... waiting for us to put the pieces back together. I had an image of him walking out of Mississippi, hat in hand, looking for a light in a window..." --Krista

'Resolutely refraining from name calling, "Robert Johnson Has Left Mississippi" amounts to a subtle commentary on presidential incompetence in the wake of a natural disaster, that also poses the almost unanswerable "Will it ever be as it was before?" The foregoing said, in the final verse Detor has embedded a poetic sting, "You came like a saint in a Stetson hat/With God in your stride, who'd imagine that."

Lyrics:

Follow the line of the railroad track
The sky is raining fire, baby don't look back
Don't look back whatever they say
Cause hell's breakin' loose on Independence day
Hell's breakin' loose on Independence day

It's Babylon, baby, and the worst is true
Night is a river and it's drowning you,
Drowning you, right where you lay
And water's comin' in on Independence Day

But down the road, God only knows
Must be a light in a window
There is a door, I heard someone say
There's nothing more here for you,
be on your way, be on your way

Sweet honeysuckle, where's your honeybee
Went off and died and made a fool of me
Made a fool of me and he went away
And Honey's all gone on Independence Day
And Honey's all gone on Independence Day

Fight fire with fire like they tell you to
You'll find there's nothing left to burn for you
No thing to burn, no thing to say 2
Just smoke and dirt on Independence Day
Smoke and dirt on Independence Day

And down the road, God only knows
Must be a light in a window
There is a door, I heard someone say
There's nothing more here, be on your way
Nothing more for you here, be on your way

You came like a saint in a Stetson hat
With God in your stride, who'd imagine that
Your time would come, now be on your way
God is movin' on this Independence Day
Yeah, God is movin' on this Independence Day

So follow the the line of the railroad track
The sky is raining fire, baby don't look back...

  • Excellent! Krista Detor is at the tippy-top of my favorite singer-songwriter list, and has easily held onto that position for all of the year I've known her. She is outstanding...thank you!
