@ZePopTart I could believe that social demograophics would validate that principle, but over what time frame? Anything longer than 15-25 years max, and I would question the assertion. Also, there is demonstrable proof that societies with excessively harsh punitive systems ARE more law abiding, because the law breaking subculture becomes eradicated!

@matbroomfield I learned in my sociology class that crime rates remain fairly consistent throughout time in the same areas regardless of how many arrests were made that year. It's a study by Andre Michel Guerry. My tiny little brain can't really fathom why this is.... but I guess the study is really just saying that crime is a disease of certain subcultures and it's unavoidable unless you change the culture. It can't be solved as easily as just arresting or "exterminating" people.

When a cockroach or a termite is devouring your house, you don't look at it and ask about its upbringing. You don't shed tears and boo hoo about how it could have been lovable with a different peer group. You exterminate it. And if you exterminate enough cockroaches, eventually your problem is solved. Now you might want to address social uinequality to reduce future problems, but people who go out and shoot up a bus because someone asked a mother not to assault her child are scum.

Well ... it's not economic position though. ;) Though it can be a factor, I have witnessed it in middle class groups just as much. Also, before anyone pulls out the race crap, it's not that either, it's just more prevalent in their families, exactly why can be debated until blue in the face, but really, everyone has the same chances of being violent for no reason. But, one thing forgotten, violent crimes are down today compared to all of history in the US. So it is a fading mentality.

@EvolBob1 not help at all. It's the subgroup in which they have been raised which made them who they are. If you had been raised that way you'd be way different.

They should pay for what they did, as they still have somewhat of a free will. But media makes them look as if they were some kind of an abomination when acually they're victims in their own way aswell.

Her belonging to a subgroup does not make it ok for her to spank her kid. The point here is that people mistake these people to be the cause. They are not.

different cultural developments has led to minor crime, that into larger crime, that danger has led to crime vs crime, leading to this shitty mindset, still, their actions are their own, their still responsible.

Every day babies are beaten, abused, molested to death because the witnesses didn't know the extent or didn't get involved.
