Yeah im pretty sure its fine, i would prefer this because your using your brakes instead of your clutch, less wear on your clutch, just throw it in neutral and let the car roll to a stop, use less gas too

"NEVER EVER down shift to the first gear!" Take this as a rule.1st gear is only used to start moving from static position!In fact, Many cars won't even allow u to do so

As for ur question, for down shifting, you can skip gears, so if u r doing 80 mph(5th gear), and then suddenly slowed down lets say to 30 mph, then u could shift(skip) to third gear,which is the appropriate for this speed.

In short, you can down shift and skip,as long as u r in the appropriate speed for the gear you r shifting to

ive seen some people put the car in neutral or just slow down without downshifting, just the break, and then put it in neutral when they stop, is this ok to do?
