Student: If you respect them, then they will respect you?
Dr. O: If you respect them, exactly. First of all, you learn respect. Plus, what I learned from that is, "Don't be snobby." Don't think, "I was the best of the year." At that time, I knew I was getting into Lufthansa. 10,000 applicants! Only 30 got it, and I am one of the 30. Can you imagine how I got to the military service? Like that. I am the greatest. I am the best. Best of the year. I know it all. But they taught me that when it comes down to this all of it doesn't matter. What really matters is that you stand in for somebody. That you really work as a team. And, that is a lesson that I learned a lot there.
That's why looking back, "No boring moment," "Respect for people," that I would really do well with that. So, at the same time it was the worst time of my life. In that sense...because...why was it the worst time of my life? Because it was the least time where I could decide for myself what I want to do. I was told to do this and that. In school, are you told to do what you want to do?
Students: Yes. Kind of.
Dr. O: In a certain way, yes, because parents expect. But, also a lesson I learned in the U.S. is, you will never have so few responsibilities in your life again and so much fun. So if you don't have fun now, I don't mean party around, I really mean enjoy the time. And, doing something right. Respect for people is something that really brought me through life.
