Season of the Samurai, which premiered at the 2007 Santa Barbara Film Festival and is having it's Canadian premier when it opens the Just For Laughs Festival in July,is a documentary that follows the on and off field exploits of an all Japanese baseball team playing in America for the first time under the leadership of ex major leaguer Warren Cromartie. This is the story of the first time an all foreign team has competed in an American sports league.
The film charts the Bears journey as an 'Away' team --a modern day group of wandering samurai—as they travel from Chico to Long Beach, Fullerton, San Diego, Surprise and Mesa and play 90 games over a grueling 97 day schedule as part of the Golden Baseball League's inaugural season.
Season of the Samurai also takes an in depth look at the manager of the team, Warren Cromartie. After his playing days came to an end, Cro went through both professional and personal hardships. Cro came to his job with the Bears in an effort to jump start his career and perhaps even find a new meaning to life.
His erratic intensity proved to be an enigma to his players. This, coupled with the cultural clash between the Japanese and American styles of playing baseball, created a rollercoaster relationship between Cro and the team. But even with that rocky relationship it was a summer they would never forget.

Reminds me of Joe Schultz, Seattle Pilots manager, as depicted in the book Ball Four.

i saw this team play the fullerton flyers the year that they were in the usa. they played a double header vs the flyers (7 inning games instead of 9) and it was awesome seeing them play. there was a band in the crowd playing a song for each batter and stuff. it was cool, even tho there was only 50 people in the crowd haha
