Two years without a pressure ulcer:
Patients in Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea are receiving safer and better quality healthcare thanks to improvements delivered by the 1000 Lives Campaign.

The two-year patient safety initiative which ends today (Wednesday 21 April) has also published its latest set of figures. It is estimating that 852 additional lives have been saved in its first eighteen months throughout Wales and more than 29,000 episodes of harm have been averted in its first twelve months.

Staff at ABM University Health Board have implemented a number of life-saving interventions both in hospitals and the community.

The changes that have been made in key areas such as reducing infections, preventing pressure sores and rapid response to the deteriorating patient have made a real difference to patient care.

Mr David Sissling, Chief Executive of ABM University Health Board, said:

Whilst the 1000 Lives Campaign has already delivered significant improvements it has also laid the foundations for further quality initiatives to improve quality and patient safety.

Building on existing initiatives and good practice, improvements have been made in a number of key areas, providing a new standard of care for many patients. The Health Board has led the way in:
• Implementing pressure ulcer and nutritional risk assessment (screening) and developing and implementing the SKIN Bundle for patients who are assessed as being at high risk of developing a pressure sore whilst they are in hospital. The aim of the SKIN Bundle is to prevent patients developing pressure sores, which has been rolled out to more than 80% of wards. It is recognised that residents in care homes are also at risk of developing pressure sores so the bundle is being piloted in one nursing home in Neath Port Talbot. Once it has been established that the process is right for care homes, the plan is to roll out the bundle to all care homes in Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea.
