United Nations, January 2009 (English Video): UN peacekeeping has been developed to help countries torn by conflict create conditions for lasting peace since the first mission was established in May 1948. There have been a total of 63 UN peacekeeping operations. Currently, more than 100,000 military and civilian personnel serve in 20 UN peace operations worldwide. Over the years, UN peacekeeping has evolved to meet the demands of different conflicts and changing political landscapes. It has proved itself to be an efficient and cost-effective international instrument to restore peace in post-conflict situations. In addition to military functions, todays UN peacekeeping undertakes a wide variety of other complex tasks. Peacekeepers now are administrators and economists, police officers and legal experts, de-miners and electoral observers, human rights monitors and specialists in civil affairs, gender, governance, humanitarian workers and experts in communications and public information. UN peacekeeping continues to evolve, rising to meet new challenges and political realities.

  • I like how Rwanda doesn't even get it's own sentence, 800,000 dead over the course of 100 days but hey that was just a bump in the otherwise smooth road of peacekeeping. Yeah, real great...

  • The U.N. has done a lot more than people give them credit for. I made a slideshow of UN peacekeepers, you should check it out! watch?v=5Ik_6nIqKp8

  • There've been big UN peacekeeping successes -- like Liberia, Ivory Coast, East Timor, Eastern Slavonia -- but also tragic failures, like Rwanda and Srebrenica. Considering how difficult such situations are, the successes are impressive -- and were achieved at low cost, especially compared to the thousands of billions the US wasted on its disastrous go-it-alone intervention in iraq. Still, the failure of UN peacekeeping in some other cases does call for hard thinking about how to do better.

And you know why the UN did nothing? Because the USA went against it. I love the idea of the UN, and I support their peacekeeping work, but I think the veto-right that USA and several other countries has must be removed. No country should have the right to put in veto against the wills of a majority of the other nations..

  • Sharing, Justice and Peace for all the world. Peace keeping will make war extinct, not the world.

  • I love this video
