@vitoamadore - Actually, on reflection... I'd say it's that the mother see's the tattoo as a personal insult to her more than anything else. The mother has a strict philosophy-based regime of raising B-Children (beautiful children) and sees the tattoo as a sign of rebellion from her daughter.

@vitoamadore - Hi there. Tattoos are taboo and looked down upon in Japan because of their association with gangs. This would disqualify her from entering the Olympics, and therefore ending the family's legacy and honour (and chance of finally winning a gold medal). That's the main thing, but it's also a sign of defiance; that she's deeper aligned with her boyfriend, who also has a butterfly tattoo. It's the last straw for the mother after all she's invested in them.
