oh, it was performed in the 80s, a puritan age. the erotic lines got changed. the action on stage also got changed and became "correct". but i love it nontheless. (it is a bit shocking how erotic this scene really is. it is supposed to stand for love-making.)

It's bowdlerized, but you are being too harsh. The performance is still very good.

People out of China dont know the performers, the legendary Kun Opera partners HuWenYi(华文漪) & YueMeiTi(岳美缇). This interpretation came out in 1980s. Shockingly successful, it was regarded as one of the best interpretations of 牡丹亭.驚夢 ever. HuaWenYi lived in US btw 1990-2000;she was the guest lecturer in Yale, Princeton & Columbia East Asia Studies. She received NEA National Heritage Fellowships in 1990s for her outstanding artistic achievement.

Watching it again and again. This is still be the best interpretation of 牡丹亭.驚夢 ever. Love them. You simply cannot find such a comaprable pair for this any more.

the lyrics are pretty explicit by the classical Chinese literary standards. I watched in last night at some experimental theatre where this excerpt was shown in full traditional costumes and sounds - the singers were flwon in from Nanjing especially for this show. marvellous.
