The Ruthwell Cross is an Anglo-Saxon monument carved in the 7th century. It is marked with scenes from the Bible as well as pagan style engravings. In Germanic Runes a version of the poem ''the dream of the rood' is written. The full version can be found in the Vercelli book. This video contains a reading in Old English, of the fragment of the poem that is carved onto the ruthwell monument. The writing is the oldest example of the English language. The cross is kept in a church in Ruthwell near Dumfries in Scotland.
