This is video I took on the Kansas Turnpike (Interstate 35) near El Dorado, KS on the evening of May 12, 2010. Straight line winds/downburst toppled high tension power lines across the interstate. The semi in the video hit the wires at highway speeds, and was spun around. It took out the guard rail next to the overpass, then the trailer smashed into the pillar on the overpass of KS-254 in El Dorado.

The turnpike was closed in both directions for approximately 4 hours because of this crash. There was also a Tornado Warning issued by the National Weather Service in Wichita which included the El Dorado area. Police asked people in their cars to take shelter in ditches, however, the rotation and storm stayed to the north of where we were stopped.

I am a storm chaser based in Norman, OK but originally from Lansing, MI. You can visit my website at http://www.michiganstormchaser.com for more information about me and full accounts from my past storm chases including video and pictures.

  • Love the anti-trucker crowd. Ignorant at best. Insurance Institute stats are 2010. 1.26 million car/suv accidents. 17,000 big truck. of the 17,000 big truck accidents, 15926 were the fault of the smaller vehicle. Dont take my word, google census.gov for accidents. Trucks drove a little over 338 million miles in 2010. Thats not bad numbers for a bunch of (so-called) dumb truck drivers. Walk to the rail head to get ur food next time ungreatful dicks.

  • Id like to see all of you anti-truckers get in one and see if you can even make it out of the drive way. The truckers aren't the problem its the company's they work for who don't follow the fmcr rules and the state and county not considering that every time they repave the road it is no longer the same hieth.
