@bornbillsmith As much as I don't like Reagan, he had a phenomenal speechwriter in Peggy Noonan and Peter Robinson. Ted Sorensen, Kennedy's speechwriter is the Gold Standard for speech writing. I met Ben Rhodes, Preident Obama's National Security Speechwriter who is phenomenal. He wrote the Bin Laden Speech and the Cairo Speech

@bornbillsmith It would be a nice idea, but any president is WAY too busy to write a speech that long and important. However, if you watch enough of the West Wing you'll see that the president does dictate the message he wants for his speeches, and revises what Toby and Sam write so that their writing fits what he thinks. So, in a way, it's still his ideas even though the words were penned by others. It's just their job to present the president's message to the public.

@bornbillsmith Because Presidents are not necessarily great speechwriters - look at Dubya, for instance, who once stated that he believed "that man and fish can coexist peacefully" with a straight face. They pay people to help them not look like complete dorks.

I don't understand.
I thought surrely the President would write his own speech
especially when it came to something like an inaugurial speech.
If he doesn't write it then why have him give it.and if the President is reading something he didn't wtite isn't that the same thing an actor does when he
reads a script.
Maybe Reagan was more qualified then I thought.
He knew how to read his lines ,

"A guy died from it. This campaign had fatalities." Greatest line in this episode.
