My Way, Donovan's Way

I attended a live performance by John Eric Booth http://www.youtube.com/user/johnericbooth at The Mint in Los Angeles last month, where I was fortunate enough to interview the Prince of Cool! He (as well as Sharon Dahlonega and Grand Bush) inspired me so much, that I decided to cover a song from the Great American Songbook, and I think Didier picked the BEST of the BEST song to cover for me. HeHeHe!

Today, Mr. Booth posted a contest for kids, (between elementary to High School ages), for a chance to get their singing performance noticed around the word. "My Way" is a song popularized by Frank Sinatra. Its lyrics were written by Paul Anka and set to music based on the French song "Comme d'habitude" composed in 1967 by Claude François and Jacques Revaux, with lyrics by Claude François and Gilles Thibault. Anka's English lyrics are unrelated to the original French song. "My Way" is often quoted as the most covered song in history.

Donovan, you have a well-trained voice that ably manages the peaks & valleys of a song like "My Way," but lacks proper lyrical interpretation to transform this standard into your own unique testament. And it could not be otherwise. "The record shows, I took the blows . . ." What blows? You are a callow 12 years of age. Thus the exercise becomes pretentious. Do not be rushed into songs unbefitting your age. Give yourself proper material & time to evolve. You have talent. Let it shine.
