Where pneumatics is still used, Foxboro (and Yokogawa's licenced-versions of same) remain the top of their class.
I also think that for a physical translation of how PID formulae works in a controller, pneumatics (through the likes of Foxboro 54/58 series and the respective TIs) is the way to go.

@dagiffy Cool. The Foxboro model 13A is a real workhorse of the pneumatic instrumentation world. Foxboro still sells it, and provides replacement parts to keep them going. Properly cared for (the biggest concern is providing them with a clean and dry instrument air supply), they will last decades.

@dagiffy Check out this "Electronic Instruction Book" (a PDF file with hyperlinks) at Foxboro's website: resource (dot) invensys (dot) com (slash) instrumentation (slash) documentation (slash) eib (slash) Entry (dot) pdf

Believe it or not, there are still quite a few of these transmitters still in service. If I'm not mistaken, Foxboro still manufactures it!
