In the early hours of 10 May 2006, St Barnabas' Anglican Church, Sydney was tragically destroyed by a fire thought to be caused by an electrical fault. The building was lost and, with it, a fine 1879 Hill organ. In January of that same year, Pastor de Lasala, made what turned out to be the last photographic and aural record of the church and organ respectively.

  • Thanks, Pastor, for the photographic and aural record of this Hill organ and also your spoken commentary. It's a bitter-sweet saga, isn't it!

  • Gerard, it was only by pure accident that I brought along my mini-disc recorder. My pictures are the last photographic record of the church and organ. I know that the insurance will cover the loss of the pipe organ. However, I am led to believe that an electronic is being considered . . .

  • In relation to your last sentence ... ...What a disgusting thought! Try and stop this!

  • Easier said than done. We are dealing here with the Evangelical Anglican Church in Sydney which is not generally supportive of pipe organs in their churches (or rainshelters, as they like to call them).

  • hmm

My work is based on sound editing, one of the many things i do is record instrument samples. I am currently sampling my 80 key Bass Accordion. Perhaps i may be of assistance with these organ samples. If you have recordings of singular notes, i may be able to create samples from them.

    Regards Keith

  • Thank you for your offer. When I made my recording, I played the chromatic scales in 'one go' without giving much separation between the notes. This might be prolematic, unless you think otherwise.

  • Without singular notes it would be almost impossible. When i make instrument samples i use the middle C octave note from each bank. And to get other notes i alter there frequency and duration, and even that is limited to 1 octave.

    Anyway thanks for your reply.

  • A colleague did suggest Hauptwerk. The only problem is that the sound samples I took are not long enough.

  • Very sad, actually, that an organ like that was lost. If your samples are good enough, though, you might be able to create a sound-bank or something for a program like Hauptwerk.
