My Top 25 Musicals 1970-2010

A personal list of my top 25 musicals going back the last 4 decades. I'm surprised at the number I had to leave out, some very notable omissions, mostly due to the guilty pleasures elbowing their way in.

Problem is so many great musicals were made way before 1970, so you have so limited yourself. I wonder how many of these would make a best 25 list if you had gone back to say 1950 the last decade of the great MGM musicals let alone way back to the days of Astaire/Rodgers and Busby Berkley. Just the opinion of a 60 year old with tastes that go back before I was born.

@Snowydog123 @Snowydog123 I hopefully plan to get around to those other areas, its certainly not for lack of familiarity or love for those eras, not by a long shot...its just I wanted to narrow the focus, and going back any farther than the 70's when many more were being made would have the selections way too tough! If you want some brief snippets from the older eras, you may enjoy my Dancing compilation I put up recently, that covers more ground..

why are doors considered a musical movie? it's just a biographical movie not a musical!!!

@rose060495 that was a tough call, I know, and valid observation. Purely a personal choice of course.. I just think Stone's editing of the music with the visuals and Kilmer's vocal work on the film transcend the "standard bio pic featuring a soundtrack by the artist" in enough ways that it made my cut.

can't believe phantom of the opera weren't put in there! haha, that film is amazing. but i'm gonna watch these films now :) i love musicals, didn't recognise the majority of the ones in here, thankyou!

A list I could go on about, if I had heard of the majority of them. Grease, yes was fun and 'boy gets girl' (cause girl has to change from pure to slut), but for me, not gr8. Amadeus was not a musical, but a biopic with music (how could biopic about Mozart not have music?), Hair, much changed for the film, but OK with what they did. Most others, had no clue about and you jipped yourself by excluding decades of musicals, real ones by the masters; R&H, Sondheim, ALW, Kern, Lerner and Loewe, etc.

uh, i think the dores isn't a musicul. i mean, there is music in it, but it's the bands music and the movie is about te band
