Joseph McDonald, a violinist who took up pipes as an adult, refers to the key of the Highland Pipes as "A" in his 1759 manuscript. And I expect he'd know. Granted, "A" was lower then, but not as low in the British Isles as in the continental Baroque.

PeterPiper86. the strathspey is a version of Ewie wi' the Crooked Horn, which starts off in Amix and ends in D. I don't know the reel, I'm afraid.

Sounds wonderful :) I must agree, that lower pitch adds to the beauty of piobaireachd. I have a question, however: what are the titles of the strathspey and reel played before it? Thanks in advance!
I actually don't know. I just need a chanter in "A" that plays the "C" and "F" natural and is a bit quieter for playing indoors. I did a lot of experimenting and have settled on this chanter with Higgins brand reeds and am having good success with it.
