In this video, Betty and her husband, Rick, go to Keeneland Horse Race track in Lexington, Kentucky, about 30 miles from our home. There are four restaurants at Keeneland, three of which are open to the public. We obtained a reservation to the Equestrian Room, which has a very nice atmosphere for watching the horse races. It also has very good food! We had a wide variety of foods to choose from for our lunch. Rick settled on a cup of burgoo soup and a reuben sandwich with potato salad. I ordered the chicken salad, which was served with green and purple lettuce leaves, nestled in a ring of fresh fruit, including strawberries, cantaloupe, honeydew melon, and grapes. All of the food was delicious!
We had a great time betting on the horses. We placed small bets on three of the races, and picked the winner in all three races. We threw in one small bet on a long shot (81:1), and lost on that horse, decreasing our winnings a bit. Altogether, we came out ahead about $5.00. Its a good thing we didnt plan to make money on our bets—just have a little fun!
All in all, the day was a lot of fun, and we were able to show you a little bit of the race track atmosphere, a look behind the scenes, and some terrific food. I will choose one of the items from the Keeneland menu, and prepare it according to Keenelands recipe, and upload it in the next few days!

  • Keeneland is a really special race track and is a wonderful and not expensive way to spend a day. One doesn't have to bet to come out feeling like a winner.

  • That's true! We had a great time! Thanks for your lovely comment!

  • I never gamble. For me it's about as productive as sitting at home in the john trhowing money down the commode and flusjing it. LOL.

My Mom likes to gamble, and she often wins, though she usually goes to casinos rather than horse tracks.

  • I don't gamble, except for situations like this. We went there to enjoy the food and the horses, and, the betting was just something to do for the video. I was careful to bet very little and very conservatively!

  • Indeed that looks like a very pleasant way to spend a Sunday, in the horse capital of the world :). I see you still have your lovely autumn colours there. Here in Quebec they arrive and depart somewhat sooner... *snif*

  • Yes, we still have leaves on the trees and fresh herbs in the herb garden--but that may end this weekend! It was a pleasant trip to Keeneland to watch the races and enjoy a meal! I hope you enjoyed the video! Thanks for viewing and commenting!

  • I used to go to Bay Meadows race track in the San Francisco area on friday nights with my ex husband, mom and dad, and my aunt and uncle. I haven't been in a really long time and I miss it! Looks like you had a blast!

  • I enjoy all your field trips. It looks like a lot of fun!

  • Thanks for your lovely comment! I'm not into gambling that much, either, or I would have bet a lot more $! I just wanted to show the whole racetrack experience, and I ended up making two of the dishes that we had for lunch. It's nice to hear from you--all the way from Germany!

    Warm wishes from Kentucky,

    --Betty :)
