My first trip overseas was to Germany in the summer of 1998, to a small town in Bavaria called Frammersbach. The town was in the midst of their summer festival. You can imagine my surprise when one evening the rock band playing under the beer tent launched into John Denver- and everyone under the tent knew every word!  At that time I had no idea John's music was loved by so many around the world.

I was in Japan right after his death and attending a concert of university students playing guitars near Tokyo. The concert was long and not everyone could perform perfectly but it was good. When the concert was over they all came on the stage and started playing Country Roads. The audience was surprised and someone said John Denver had died. The room burst into tears including the players. unforgettable.

I guess everyone who has lived overseas has John Denver story. I have two. I had just climbed to the top of Mt. Emei in Shishwan Provence China and was staying in a monastery with associated guest house. We could here through the walls. Some of us were singing or talking and before long some chinese started singing Country Road in English and we all joined in through the walls. This was right after the massacre in Tanamin Square. John touched more than we will know.

When I was in high school in the 1070's me my brother loved listening to his songs God I so miss those days !
