Nuclear Dawn was a modification for Valves Source engine that combined First Person Shooter action with fast-paced Real Time Strategy in the aftermath of an apocalyptic war.

When I joined the team back in 2005 Nuclear Dawn was one of the most professional looking mods out there. I joined because I knew it would challenge my skills as an artist and level designer to maintain the high standards that had already been set by other members of the team. This was only my second map for the Source engine and during that time I learned a great deal about game play, graphics and optimisation.

Unfortunately although nd_russia was completed Nuclear Dawn remains unfinished, but has recently been picked up by another dev team so all is not lost. Also, a modified version of the map will also feature in the Off-Limits mod upon its release in the very near future.

  • @mex1cution The focus of Nuclear-Dawn has been a mix of RTS and RPG. The retail version doesn't deviate much from the original mod's concept. If anything, MORE focus was put on the classes in the retail version. There was no support class originally.

  • @SpazzyMcGee1337 the gameplay has been altered actually, the mod was more of just a class based shooter, the retailed version is more commander focused.

  • @862matstar The original models are easy to find, but not the banana story...

I followed ND updates since 2006 up until it died. One of the devs was working on the concept art for the LCM-7 Avenger assault rifle. Another dev told him he should make it look more organic. In reply to this suggestion, he replaced the concept art of the Avenger with a banana. The new, hilarious image was posted on the forum. The LCM-7 Avenger was from that point forward labeled "The Banana".

  • @SpazzyMcGee1337 to be honest i got my gaming computer when this game was 'dead' so i have only really just started to look it up so i guess..... no :)

  • @862matstar I'm still kind of sore over the shear magnitude of the change.from the original feel of the game. The core gameplay concept is still the same, but I just can' t understand why they changed the model design SO MUCH, and the current models are SO BAD compared to the original designs.

Please tell me someone here remembers the banana...

  • @SpazzyMcGee1337 I know you posted this message 4 months ago, but the game has just gone into public beta on steam. If you preorder the game you get to play the beta. :)

  • @SpazzyMcGee1337 its still working.

    its still on steam.

    we just gotta wait.

  • Nuclear Dawn was the first mod I followed from the early stages. Too bad it fell apart. :(

  • @RisefromyourGRAVE the whole thing that attracts people to fpd/rts crossover is the strategy aspect mixed with you being that grunt being commanded and having to be a cog large war machine. macro wouldn't work with this because the there aren't stats for what units can/can't do it all depends on who your commanding

  • @swirling0panda damnit calm down. just asking.
