I did almost exactly what Patrick's friend wanted to do by putting my hard drive with XP installed into an enclosure and connecting it to my father's computer that also had XP installed. Copied all the data that I didn't want to lose when I started getting blue screens that turned out to be the result of a rogue Avast file. Didn't have any trouble with it having the OS installed on it.

Avast is ok, but it has trouble removing certain problematic variants of some viruses that AVG removes fine.
AVG has the best combo of being reliable, no intrusive ads, & not requiring an annoying key.
Have also seen a town here in NC that had NO protection from viruses.
Saw over 80 viruses when I checked their pc.
SCARY!!!
