Burmese Percussion Instruments

Mae Sot is a border Thai town close to Burma. In Mae Sot and its environs we find a mixture of people from many different origins. Without any doubt the best to do in town for a traveller is heading towards the market. Visit the day market is a fascinating experience. Not only because the astonish presence of products and exotic food from wherever. Still far more interesting is the people we meet. People coming from a puzzle of different ethnic groups. Burmese, Karen, Hmong, Chinese and Thai are among many others we meet on the busy streets around the market. At Ban Mae Tao, a village 3 km west of Mae Sot, on the right side of the road to the border, lies the Burmese temple Wat Thai Wattanaram (some times called Wat Phattanaram). Monks, novices, "dekwat" leaving in that temple, also lay people going to the monastery for leisure or spiritual purposes are Burmese. On the 2nd floor of the main wiharn are the Burmese musical instruments we see on the video. When I arrived there were a group of lay men chatting and playing the percussion instruments. So I had a great chance to record them while playing music. /-----/

Mae Sot és una població al nord-oest de Tailàndia, ubicada molt a prop de la frontera amb Birmània. A la ciutat i els entorns viu gent de diferents procedències. El millor que pot fer el viatger en arribar a Mae Sot és dirigir-se al mercat. Si és curiós hi viurà una experiència fascinant. Trobarà miríades de productes exposats, menjars de tota mena, exòtiques fruites i verdures, animals insòlits, però per damunt de tot el que més l'interessarà seran les persones que hi trobarà. Gent d'ètnies diferents procedents d'ambdues bandes de la frontera. Minories ètniques com els karen i els hmong, per exemple. També birmans i xinesos. I tais, per descomptat. Al vilatge de Ban Mae Tao, a uns 3 kms a l'oest de Mae Sot, al costat dret de la carretera que es dirigeix a la frontera birmano-tailandesa, hi ha el temple birmà Wat Thai Wattanaram, de vegades anomenat Wat Phattanaram. Tant l'arquitectura com el disseny de les dependències són d'estil netament birmà. També són birmans els monjos, els novicis i els "dekwat" (una mena de sagristans al servei de les necessitats materials de la comunitat religiosa). Els laics que visiten el temple per motius espirituals o de lleure també són originaris de Birmània. Al "wiharn" principal del monestir budista, concretament a la gran sala del segon pis, trobem una important col·lecció d'instruments musicals birmans. Quan vaig arribar-hi hi havia una colla d'homes parlant i passant l'estona. Alguns assajaven tocant els instruments de percussió. Va ser una ocasió magnífica per gravar-los.
