@MrPmd1 In order to convert the indigenous people the Spanish combined their All Soul's and All Saint's Day with an Aztec festival of the god Mictecacihuatl. Also in pre-Hispanic days the Aztec people were known to have rituals celebrating the death of ancestors. Aztec people believed that death was just another stage of life, and not something to fear or be the end of everything. So yes it is a Catholic tradition but it does have its traces with Aztec culture as well.

@MrPmd1 It is the open well known celebrations of Death in those countries that is so much influenced by Catholicism.The culto privado of Senor la Muerte (private cult which is aspected to the older more secret aspects) is definitly older than catholicism.what is practiced nowdays that is known about in the open should be considered a survival of old ways despite the coming of Catholicism, if you ask me.
