Well Amtrak P42DC #73 overheated south of Jackson Mississippi the night before and CN gave them a GTW GP38-2... which also overheated. At Jackson they added the 1039 onto the train so they could continue up to Carbondale. Amtrak 59 had brought a P40 down from Chicago earlier this morning at 1:16 AM and set it out on the wye north of town for 58 to pick up.

8:10 - After filming M396 with 12,000' we drove to south Wetaug to catch a 7 Hour late Amtrak #58, the P5 on 1039 sounds great here! I really like this scene with the barn and corn in the back ground.

8:37 - We raced to a location outside of Anna Illinois see the train again before Carbondale, at this point 58 is running on the Approaches of M396.

8:54 - Its a good thing he had to stop at Boskydell Rd. for M396 to clear S. Carbondale. We got stuck behind traffic on Route 51 south of Carbondale and just barely made it in time.

9:06 - With the outbound crew Chicago on the train they cut off the IC 1039 from the train and head up to the Yard Office to leave the unit for the L589 Du Quoin Yard job to come down and pick it up. The engineer really laid on the hard to handle P5...

9:36 - 30 Minutes later after the 1039 was set out and the trainmaster drove the crew over to the #831 which was waiting at the crotch switch at the wye. They back the engine down to the station where un happy passengers wait to get on their way.

9:58 - Finally the train departs nearly 7 Hours late bound for Chicago... I have to admit the engineer really knows how to work the horn! I love the way it sounds here, its also neat to see a P40 lead the train which was recently taken out of storage. This is a scene not normally seen during the day due to the fact that Amtrak is a nocturnal train till they reach Champaign at about 6:10 in the morning.

  • Wow, what a great train watching day you had - loved all of the horn action, and great units, too! That K5LA on 831 was awesome!!

  • Thanks! It definitely was a day to remember... 831 was a nice touch I didnt know about till the last second. My first P40 so that was pretty neat..

  • Love that first shot bro! Sweet video, love watching it over and over. Can't get enough of that P5...

  • did it break down?

  • WOW!!! Absolutely love it!!! Well done!!!

  • P40... Long hood forward

  • Great vid!!! The only thing that would have made it better(not that you had any control over it) is if the CN had not repainted it. Still an IC unit leading a passenger train in 2010 great catch!

  • Sweet video!!!

  • Very nice...Thanx for sharing.....At the end he really put on a good show :-)

  • Yup... the outbound engineer is Batman.

I heard about this debacle after the fact. I was at home in bed after bringing 59 into Carbondale from Chicago this particular morning.

  • Flo was the coach attendant, Dot the sleeping car attendant and Grady the chef. Also looked like Batman and Maytag on the operating crews involved, though not everyone showed. Just glad it wasn't MY train this particular day!

Did have a five hour late 59 I was conductor of quite recently, though.

  • that actuallly sounds more like a K5H to me
