I was born in 63, and I DO remember this sort of picnic behavior in the 60s--and not just my family either. I remember being surprised in the early 70s when we were told we had to clean up after ourselves. The presumption was that someone else would come along and pick it up. I find this show to be rather accurate for the most part. A few anachronisms and exaggerations do creep in from time to time--but a remarkable effort at authenticity overall.

Our parents' generation sucked the earth dry of its natural resources...and we get stuck cleaning up after them. Thanks.

I guess the big question is, did the film crew pick up that litter after they shot that scene?

Judging from some of these comments, I hope people here realize that the purpose of this scene isn't that people did this with their trash all the time in the 1960s. What Betty and Don did is portraying symbolism/foreshadowing of them appearing to have a storybook perfect family having a picnic but their marriage is actually littered with lies, secrets, cheating, ect that is about to ultimately end it.

I've lived in areas where the reverse is true. The parks are a lot cleaner and a lot safer so that families can do more than just THINK about having a picnic. Depends on your location, I suppose. Too bad news stations only want to share the negative stories.

So this was after Don broke it off completely with Bobbie right? I hate to defend Don, but his cheating is a huge problem for him. He clearly lived Betty and tried to be faithful but u guess a man with mommy issues can't ever be that.
