He was a former glider pilot, you can learn alot about flying without an engine once you've mastered gliding.

Bet the insurance company hated seeing this plane being lapped on by the ocean - aircraft + salt water = Total loss.

@lavakava haha.. you trolling around.. would you like to explain how and what you would sue the FAA for ?? maybe it was pilot error... even if it was not... why would it be the FAA's fault ? oh and your crap about Piston engines is getting old !! turbo-fan engines can fail through alot of different things... a Bird strike would be one.. but not the only one !! I mean come on... wake up Lavakava you don't know anything about avaition...

Made in china.
Planes don't ditch everyday, the fact that you've seen seven or eight near your home is amazing, but theres a large river near my house, and no plane has ever ditched there. The hudson airbus ditching was on the news, because that was a huge passenger jet, the amount of unsuccessful ditching atttempts with airliners of this size in the past is large, but the pilot of the airbus landed it perfectly, which is incredibly hard.

Ballistic Recovery Systems won't do anything. Better training will. As far as pistons being unreliable, I flew a Cessna 310 for 2 years in central Australia and never had any issues, the 0-470 like the 0-360 are engines that have been around for ages because simply they are reliable IF you don't cut corners on 50 and 100 hourly checks and rebuilds. A PT-6 on the other hand, is a turbine engine and does not have nearly as clean record as the old continentals and lycomings.
