Part two: Bellowing Moose: Berlitz General Union Teachers Tokyo (Japan) offering a quick lesson in how to address the masses when you are striking at your company because you haven't been given a base up/cost of living adjustment in 16 years and have no "bonus" that is common practice (valued up to 5 months' salary) by japanese custom/practice. Here we can hear the Secretary General of the Union bellowing (over to traffic and wind) the following message:"Berlitz teachers are currently on strike. For the past 16 years, there has been no base up. Zero Bonus. Benesse Corporation's subsidiary company's teachers are currently on strike. Please help support us."
Now, let's try to say it in Japanese!
"Beruritsu no koshi wa genzai sutoo kekko chuu desu! Jyuu-roku nenkan base up wa nashi!
Bonus wa zero desu!
Benesse no kogaisha Beruritsu no koshi wa genzai sutoo kekko chu desu! Goshien o yoroshiju onegaishimasu!!"
For the record, neighboring shops did complain and the US Embassy police stationed a block away did come over to investigate. He could be heard about two blocks away in downtown Tokyo!
There, wasn't that fun?
Did you enjoy it?

  • 2005 salary freeze- Begunto struck & got a pay thaw for ALL instructors. (The parent company claims 5 years record profits in 2008 See Benesse site investor relations. Makes sense?)

In 1992 Berlitz Japan increased contract lesson burdens 30 lessons to 40 - de facto 33 % increase in required availability w/ little or no comp. The Union fought 8 years to return to 30 unit/week.

A new 40 unit contract teacher gets the same unit pay as back in the mid 1980s. The Union is fighting against it.

  • the banner actually says " Berlitz teachers(blue for company color) are currently on strike. (red, raditional strike color)"

With a few minor changes in vocabulary the chant could be used for striking airline employees or nurses as well.

  • Note: yoroshiku onegaishimasu is the proper spelling. " J" was a typo.
