Yet another of Respighi's wonderful compositions that has not, so far as I could find, yet been added to YouTube.

Respighi was an accomplished violinist who performed with the Orchestra of the Imperial Opera when he studied under Rimsky-Korsakov and played for the Mugellini Quartet from 1903 to 1908 in Bologna.
In short, Respighi knew what could be accomplished with strings and he used that knowledge to write pieces of solid and consistent beauty. This is in stark contrast to the booming and beautiful orchestrations which made him famous, but begs the question, why didn't Respighi compose more for string quartets?

Respighi's String Quartet in D Major is one of 2 he composed in that key; the other was the Quartetto Dorico. He also composed a quartet in D minor which I have not yet acquired but will someday...

Performing here is the Nuovo Quartetto Italiano.

Enjoy!
