My brother was a lifeguard for ocean city beach patol and he saved numerous people from these things. The trick is to swim with the current or parallel to the shore. People get scared that they are being dragged out to sea and try to fight the current, then getting tired and drowning from exhaustion.

@RegistrationCop Also, to add to my previous statement, it is recommended to only swim with the current and out to sea IF and ONLY IF you must. Since you would be farther out afterward by doing that than you would by swimming to the side, conservation of energy is key. Don't panic.
