I remember back in the days..1970s, all contestants fight each others first, then face the blackbelts...adding 10 for each rank. Sodan, 10 black belts; Nidan, 20; Sandan, 30; Yodan, 40; which is also a teachers rank. After that, kyokushin have a 40 to 100 person kumite on a volunteer basis...it is a test of will and determination not on techniques alone. Osh!

Thanks for uploading the video. It really demonstrates how tough one's spirit can become with the discipline of Kyokushin. Just one question: does not the sandan grading require 35 (or according to some sources, 40) rounds of kumite? I was alwayds told 30 rounds is the requirement for nidan. That is what I had to do in my own nidan grading.

Rules change slightly depending on organisatoin and location. In our organisatoin, first dan is 10 matches, second is 20, third is 30.
Ill admit, though, that i am a mere 9th kyo karateka - my knowledge is still fussy on some parts :)

Hi. Thanks for replying. Do you mind if I ask which organisation you are? I am with IKO. And well, 10 matches is the standard for green belt grading, if I am not mistaken. 20 is for shodan. It can get weird sometimes, honestly, to see 10 fights' worth of difference... but it is not easy, anyway.
Thanks,
Osu

We are with WKO. The green belt grading i saw was a 5 man kumite, and what happens after that, i don't really know. I imagine that at shodan they pop it up to 10 and then add another 10 matches per dan grade.
I trust that just 5 matches is tough, i don't dare thinking about 30 :P

Different martial arts have emphasis on different areas. Kyokushin focuses on hitting hard, hitting fast, and hitting for a long, long time. This appeals to those that want to improve their body and their endurence. While this might not be a massive display of fancy moves, one have to admire the pure stamina of the kumite participant. Each fight lasts a minute, and only has a few seconds in between. Could you stand being pounded on for more than 30 minutes?
