@13098519 Usually the higher price reels are of greater quality but not always. An example is the Daiwa SS Tournament Spinning Reels for 100 bucks. Just read the reviews at bass pro shop website. The design hasn't changed in 30 years. They are tuff as nails & may outlast $600 reels. My expensive bait cast reels are $100 to $150 range. I can't afford that really high dollar stuff. You motto to never get caught in bad weather I have adopted. I sunk my boat & almost died, hypothermia

@skjoyner - Yeah, I have some expensive ones myself.. But I figured the greater price you pay the greater quality? which might mean they can stand up to rain etc.. I always feel paranoid with that stuff though and the price you pay for your gear. Would hate for several hundred to go down the drain. A long time ago I got caught in a sand storm and it completely destroy my reels at the time (low quality stuff). After that I promised to never get caught in any bad weather just in case

@sergeantsailorman that can be dangerous with graphite rods in the boat. Graphite conducts electricity quite nicely.

@13098519 I have expensive reels myself & do not care to tear them down to clean them until I'm ready. In this situation I'd cut my line & take the reels off & put them in dry storage before they ever got soaked.

Does the rain effect your fishing reels any?

I was caught like that once on the ocean in a thunderstorm. Raining so hard, it caused the water to go flat. Looked like a carpet. Like sitting under a shower. Scary because there was also lightning flashing, and thunder banging. Funny because my buddy was trying to light a cigarette practically under water. He actually managed to get it lit. We got home safe, but I wouldn't want to do it again.
